Shotshells-mild to wild

I have a Benelli riot pump capable of firing 3-1/2" shells but, despite a lifetime of shotgun shooting, I'd never even seen a 3-1/2 until this past weekend. Thought I would picture it with a few more common varieties for comparison.

3rd from left is a garden variety 2-3/4" field load like would be used for dove or quail. Next to it, 2nd from left is still 2-3/4" but it's called a "high brass". It's slightly more powerful and is used on ducks and other similar sized game. The 3" shell on the far right represents a major kick up in power. This one is OO Buck and would be devastating to anything on the continent at close range.

OK the black one---
It looks to be another level altogether. Shooting the OO rounds gives more kick than I really want to deal with. Don't think I'll shoot this one since I like my retinas where they are.

I'm not sure what the specs of the round are. The field load is stamped "3 1/4- 1 1/8 - 8". That means 3 1/4 drams of powder, 1 1/8th ounce of shot, and #8 shot. The big black round is stamped "3 1/2 - 2 - 5" I'm guessing that means 2 ounces of #5 shot.

I have never seen a 3 1/2 in shell either. Check out the specialty 12 gauge ammo they have at ammunitiontogo! I never realized they had so many different types of oddball loads!

The Flechette Ammo looks extremely wicked!

9rds - 12 Gauge Flechette Ammo $39.00

This is 12 gauge ammo loaded with Flechette darts. A Flechette is a small dart shaped projectile, which have fins and is made from steel. This unique application of loading these Flechette darts into 12 gauge shells was widely used in vietnam for taking out snipers hiding in thick cover and trees. Due to the penetration of these projectiles, tree limbs and brush would not disperse the darts. Even if some were dispersed, this would still have an all-covering pattern within a tree or brush. This ammo is extremely deadly in thick cover. Generally 25 to 30 of these darts are placed in each 12 GA. shell.

Their prices for specialty ammo has really gone up in the past 2 years. I was recently ready to buy somemore and the price suddenly went up; I sent them an e-mail wanting the old price but they wouldn't deal. I told them that in a depression the buyer sets the price and they could go f*ck themselves.

I would pull the trigger on that round, but I would have a nice thick shoulder pad in place before I did. :bulride:

You could try my ancient old 10 gage Savage bolt action.

A real goose gun ... it'll goose the hell out of you when you shoot it.
